THE 911R

THE 911R

The 911R may have been one of the most hyped 911's to come out of Stuttgart. Journos went crazy about how good the car would be and for the luck 991 owners, those Journos were right! The 911R pays homage to the first race-inspired, light-weight 911 from 1967. The formula for such a 911 is simple: bring together racing driving dynamics to the road with the help of a powerful, naturally aspirated engine and light weight construction with the result being absolutely mental handling characteristics.

The power plant for the 911R comes from the GT3 RS in the form of a 4.0L flat-six engine that delivers 500hp to the rear wheels via an all new manual transmission. Thats right, its exclusively a manual. Chris Harris would go on to say he believes the new manual transmission produces less "drag" meaning the car feels as if it has 30-40 more hp over the GT3 RS that brings power to the wheels through Porshce's PDK gearbox. Depending on how handy you are with a manual shifter the 911R can reach 0-60mph in just 3.7sec and go on to a top speed of 200mph. Now a little history lesson.

The 1967 Porsche 911R was the creation of Austrian engineer Ferdinand Piech who was pushing for an ultra light 911 variant. Grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, Piech was obsessed with finding any way to shed weight and create the ultimate 911 that would be the template for every racing 911 ever made (the 911R lost almost 800lbs from the standard model). Unfortunately, Porsche's sales department declined to approve production so a mere 24 911R's were made.

Enjoy watching Chris Harris hoon about in the 911R and Aston Martin Vantage S, he absolutely rips these cars through some truly spectacular pieces of tarmac. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
