The 993 Turbo

The 993 Turbo coupé was released in 1995 and featured a heap of performance upgrades no other 911 had seen. Its new 3.6L turbocharged engine produced 402 hp and 398lb ft of torque. Its twin-turbos and air-to-air intercoolers, electronic engine management, redesigned cylinder heads were among some of the upgrades but the most effective were its AWD and electronic engine management system (CPU) taken straight from the 959. What one wouldn't expect is that the 993 Turbo has 8% more torque than the 959 and has similar performance figures.

Not only was it extremely fast it was also very environmentally friendly. Its two catalytic converters and an on-board-diagnostics-system made the 993 Turbo the cleanest sports car in the mid 90s. The bi-turbos allow the 993 Turbo to achieve a level of performance far superior to any of the previous production Turbos and right on par with Porsche's first supercar, the 959. They also made it the most daily-able supercars at the time. They were small, had well thought out simple interior designs. Even the dials and pedals are practically identical to the original 911's.

The Turbo's bodywork features widened rear wheel arches (approximately 6 cm), redesigned front and rear bumpers, and a fixed rear wing that houses the intercoolers. New 18-inch (460 mm) alloy wheels with weight-reducing hollow spokes were standard. The car also had brakes that were larger than those on the base Carrera model allowing the car to go from 0-60mph-0 in just 7 seconds.
