The Cayman GT4

The current Porsche Cayman GT4 is something many of us never thought would happen. Introduced in 2015 it's a lightweight mid-engine car with a naturally aspirated engine from the 911 and a six-speed stick. Using a revised and slightly de-tuned version of the 3.8-liter flat-six engine from the 911 (991) Carrera S the GT4 is good for 385hp and weighs only 1,340kg. Its vented front bumper improves cooling for the additional radiator and features aero in the form of a lower lip as well as a fixed rear wing. Compared to the standard Cayman, it sits 30mm lower, has brakes from the 991 GT3, a limited slip differential combined with Porsche Torque Vectoring, and Porsche Active Suspension Management with dampers also taken from the 991 GT3. When it launched, it was more engaging to drive and much faster than many of its more expensive siblings. According to inside sources, Porsche is preparing to develop an even faster GT4.

According to Autocar the source from Porsche recently spoke of the development of a future GT4 that will feature a 4.0-liter flat-six and call it the GT4 RS. A 4.0L engine may seem excessive but there is good reason behind that number. The source continued to report that the current 718 Cayman S can lap the Nurburgring as fast as the current GT4 when fitted with the GT4's Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires so the only way to make the GT4 faster is by adding more hp under the hood in the form of a naturally aspirated engine. It won't hit the 475hp mark of the GT3 making the new power unit destined to produce around 420-445hp.

Below, Chris Harris explains how epic of a car the GT4 is and why it was one of the most anticipated cars to come out of Stuttgart in 2015.
